The Cranes project was founded in Portsmouth in the mid-1980s by brother-sister duo Jim Shaw (drumster, keyboarder, guitarist, programmer) and Alison Shaw (singer, guitarist, bassologist) and was first published in 1986 with Fuse, an independently released and highly coveted demo cassette.
