Box set No. 2 of its CHOC collection, released by Classica dedicated to the legendary recordings in the history of recorded music. As summer approaches and with the Aix-en-Provence Festival of Lyric Art on the horizon, this 3-CD box pays tribute to Mozart and his legendary operas performed at the Festival — Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro, and Così fan tutte. It features a selection of excerpts from the 1956 and 1957 recordings, conducted by Hans Rosbaud with the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire de Paris.
The destiny of the Aix Festival is closely linked to that of Mozart’s operas. Until the mid-20th century, Mozart’s operatic works were relatively little known in France, or were rather poorly represented, unlike abroad where the composer was performed in a deeper and more authentic manner. It was in Aix, from the very beginning of the Festival in 1948, that Mozart’s operas were finally given the excellence they deserved, thanks to the initiative of its organizer Gabriel Dussurget and under the musical direction of Hans Rosbaud. The result was a resounding success and the starting point of a “Mozartmania” that has never ceased. Since then, not a single year has gone by without two of Mozart’s great operas being performed in the Cour de l’Archevêché.
