Born in Helsinki to artist parents, she is best known as the creator of the Moomins, but she also worked as a celebrated artist, author, and political cartoonist, creating artwork for magazines, books such as The Hobbit and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and large-scale paintings and murals.
