'Finn has a light, deft touch as a writer, but the images she conjures up are so subversively creepy they haunt you for days' Spectator, Best Books of the Year Shame (noun) 1. The painful feeling of having done or experienced something dishonourable, improper, foolish. 2. Ignominy, disgrace. Pilgrim Jones doesn't belong here. She belongs in European capitals, at diplomatic dinners. But here she is, in a village on the edge of Africa. No one knows why she is here or what she has run away from. And Pilgrim is not going to share her secrets - the husband who betrayed her or the children she killed in a crash. When Pilgrim is drawn to a crumbling colonial town she meets deluded philanthropists, haunted mercenaries, and witchdoctors in polyester suits - all searching for the answer of how to atone. But when two men from Europe come to find Pilgrim - with very different motives - she must confront the true meaning of shame.
