Milkman

It's about a young girl living in Northern Ireland in the time of the Troubles that was 1970's. We only get that from the blurb, actually a quote on the back cover, because no name is mentioned in the book, either of a place or a person. The author uses nicknames for everyone. The main character, middle sister is an 18 year old girl who has a maybe boyfriend and goes about her life in a politically very tensed environment, when she becomes the object of desire of one of the renouncers of state (IRA?) with the nickname Milkman. . Well, it's definitely not an easy book. I totally understand if someone dnfs it. Long periods and even longer paragraphs, sometimes extending to four pages. But I liked it. I think it worths to persist, because it often gets really funny. Maybe the writing style is a way of showing how people felt living like that then and there. . . H ιστορία μιας νεαρής κοπέλας, που ζει στη Βόρεια Ιρλανδία τη δεκαετία του '70, που τα πράγματα με τον IRA ήταν πολύ δύσκολα, πολλές φορές ακόμη και για τους ίδιους τους Ιρλανδούς. Την τοποθεσία την πληροφορούμαστε απ' το οπισθόφυλλο, γιατί μέσα στο κείμενο του βιβλίου δεν αναφέρονται κύρια ονόματα, ούτε τόπων ούτε προσώπων! Η συγγραφέας χρησιμοποιεί ψευδώνυμα για ότι θέλει να... κατονομάσει και το κάνει μέσα σε μεγάλες προτάσεις κι ακόμα μεγαλύτερες παραγράφους, που συχνά εκτείνονται μέχρι και τέσσερις σελίδες. Ο τρόπος γραφής μου θύμισε τον Λούσια του Νίκου Χουλιαρά, αν κι έχουν περάσει αρκετά χρόνια από τότε που τον διάβασα. Θα ήθελα πολύ να δω την ελληνική μετάφραση. Σίγουρα δεν είναι εύκολο βιβλίο, αλλά πιστεύω ότι αν επιμείνεις, σε ανταμείβει, γιατί σε μερικά σημεία έχει πολλή πλάκα.

An extraordinary fine writing novel. In this well written book Anna Burns combines history, politics in Ireland, social psychology and pathology, interpersonal dynamics within a stretched love story although sometimes it turns from dark to funny. A great choice for book to read.

I enjoyed the book. It has a unique stream of consciousness style, observing a society under duress and constant surveillance. However, it is not everyone's cup of tea.
