The brand new Asterix album.
At the centre of this new story: the talented Jean-Yves Ferri (author) and Didier Conrad (illustrator).
This new creative team at the heart of Asterix were introduced to the world in 2013, with the launch of the 25th album: Asterix and the Picts. The pressure was on: it was the first Asterix comic book conceived and created by new authors under the watchful eye of co-creator Albert Uderzo (who had decided to retire three years previously after a career spanning over 70 years). The demand for a new Asterix comic book was strong; readers from all around the world had waited 8 years for a new Asterix adventure. To date, Asterix and the Picts is a true success worldwide - over 5.4 million books sold in 24 languages and dialects: the publishing phenomenon of 2013.
Driven by enthused readers and the heartfelt trust bestowed by Albert Uderzo and Anne Goscinny (the daughter of the original author, René Goscinny), our new creative team have worked hard to create this new story since 2013. Their motto: to respect the values of these international successful comic books created by two geniuses of the genre, René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo.
It was while promoting Asterix and the Picts, that they had the idea to create this new Asterix comic book. It took them two years of mail correspondence, Skype sessions, sketches, essays, amendments and changes for Asterix and the Missing Scroll to come into being: an adventure that is very much in line with all the previous Asterix comic books.
While our heroes travelled to Caledonia (Scotland) and found themselves amid the Scottish clans in the previous book, this new book will have the Gaul as a backdrop instead. Caesar will have to make the trip from Rome to meet his best enemies!
Albert Uderzo - proud and cheerful - said he was amazed by the authors as their well-thought new plot around the Gallic Wars is excellent: History in history!
We were told later about Bonus Promoplus, adviser to Caesar -a name that suits him perfectly – as there are no good stories without a good “evil character”. It is said that this character is a blend of essential personalities found in our modern world. That sounds promising…!
But what is inside the scroll? What part will Caesar play in this new adventure? Will the Gauls still shake the Roman Empire and enrage the great Julius?
On 29th October, 2015, Asterix will be 56 years old. The celebrations will be incredible and despite 56 years of existence, the Gauls won’t age at all. The secret of their eternal youth is obviously due to the huge talent of the original authors who created these comics books and of those who took over the task.
The release of this new adventure is above all a human story, a passion for comics in general – and more specifically a passion for Asterix. Jean-Yves Ferri and Didier Conrad were born the same year as Asterix. They grew up following Asterix’s travels and the tribulations of the Gaulish village.
Here they are now using their pencils to animate this little world. Mr. Albert Uderzo always thought that Asterix should continue to live for the sake of millions of readers around the world; these two authors prove him right: Asterix has still great adventures ahead to share worldwide.
