Between the world and me
Incoherent, white-shaming, without a real structure. We just follow Coates' train of thought around.
Coates separates the world in two categories - Black people and those who think that are white, or else the Dreamers. I don't think that this book is a letter to his son as he claims. It seems more like an effort to make the people angry, to separate- and this in my poor mind is alarming.
In the world we live in, we try to educate our kids not just to accept the difference, but to embrace it as well. Reading for example that Coates' parents didn't let him play with white heroes as a child - something he feels proud about- is no good.
Anyway, I have always considered any kind of discrimination intolerable- and he does just that! In my mind people's actions are those which indicate if they are "good" or "bad", not their colour. Yes black people have suffered in the hands of white people but that doesn't make everybody accountable. It is like a Jewish of today blaming every single German of today to be a Nazi because of what his/her grandparents suffered (with all respect).
Although I loved THUG (that more or less had the same topic with this book) I got so tired and frustrated by Between the world and me that I don't think I will try to read any more Coates. We'll see..
